Albania has approved the development of a major new solar energy project in the municipality of Diber, further strengthening the country’s renewable energy sector and attracting additional foreign investment. The project will be carried out by the Albanian subsidiary of German renewable energy company Greencells Renewables, highlighting continued international interest in Albania’s clean energy market.
Under the approved plan, the solar power facility will have an installed capacity of 96 MW and will be built near the village of Kastriot in northern Albania. The government has granted the developer a long-term concession, allowing the plant to operate for 49 years. Construction and commissioning are expected to be completed within three years of receiving final approval.
According to project documents submitted to environmental authorities, the solar park will occupy more than 426,000 square meters. The facility will feature approximately 137,150 solar panels and 268 inverters, which will convert solar energy into electricity for integration into the national power grid.
The investment marks another important step in Albania’s strategy to expand its renewable energy capacity and diversify electricity generation sources. In recent years, solar projects have gained significant momentum as the country seeks to reduce its heavy dependence on hydropower and improve energy security.
Once completed, the Diber solar plant is expected to rank among the largest solar developments in Albania, providing additional clean energy to meet growing electricity demand while supporting the country’s long-term sustainability and environmental objectives.
