Ecological activists from Albania seek a ban on further construction of power plants on the rivers. Environmental organizations from Germany and Austria have joined forces with the organizations of the Western Balkans in the implementation of the campaign “Let’s save the blue heart of Europe”.
According to their study, the construction and operation of hydropower plants threaten the river ecosystems, but also increases the risk of flooding due to erosion and deforestation. Experts say that more is known about the tropical rain forests than on the rivers of Europe.
All electricity produced in Albania come from hydropower plants. But it is enough for 50 percent of total energy needs. The rest is imported. Therefore, Albania is attractive to foreign investors and vice versa.
