Electricity production in the first quarter of 2020 amounted to 1,546 GWh, which is 20 % higher compared to the same period last year (1,281 GWh), according to the data published by Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT).
The country’s electricity exports rose in the January-March 2020 period and amounted to 346.5 GWh, compared to just 84 GWh in the same period in 2019, while electricity imports also slightly rose to 917 GWh from last year’s 901 GWh. Almost entire volume of Albania’s electricity was generated by hydropower plants, with about 51.6 % generated by independent producers and 48 % by state-controlled producers. Electricity network losses increased by 8 % in January-March 2020 period to 573.2 GWh, with distribution losses increased by 5.9 % to 521.7 GWh and transmission losses increased by 34.8 % compared to the same period last year to 51.5 GWh.
