According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), gross electricity production reached 1,336 GWh in November 2025, down from 1,425 GWh in the same month a year earlier. Thermal power plants remained the dominant source of generation, accounting for 58.8% of total output, while hydropower plants contributed 35%. Solar and wind power plants together made up the remaining 6.2%, continuing their gradual expansion within the energy mix.
Net hydropower production amounted to 463 GWh, marking a 6% year-on-year increase, supported by more favorable hydrological conditions. In contrast, thermal electricity generation fell sharply to 706 GWh, representing a 13.6% decline compared to November 2024. Renewable electricity production from wind and solar reached 83 GWh, up 15.3% year-on-year, confirming steady growth despite its still limited overall share.
Electricity trade intensified during the month. Imports increased by 19.4% to 381 GWh, compared to 319 GWh a year earlier, while exports rose by 9.1%, reaching 600 GWh from 550 GWh in November 2024. The data point to higher cross-border electricity flows, even as domestic production weakened.
Coal production trends were mixed. Lignite output edged up by 1%, totaling 525,000 tons, while brown coal production dropped significantly by 20.1% to 401,000 tons, reflecting ongoing structural challenges in the coal sector.
Meanwhile, natural gas imports declined by 8% in November 2025, amounting to 27.5 million cubic meters, down from 29.9 million cubic meters in the same month last year, indicating lower gas demand or increased efficiency across the energy system.
