According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), gross electricity production in the country reached 1,487 GWh in January 2026, up from 1,402 GWh in the same month last year, indicating a moderate year-on-year increase in output.
In terms of generation structure, hydropower plants accounted for the largest share with 49.2%, followed by thermal power plants at 45.6%, while solar and wind contributed a combined 5.2%, reflecting the still-dominant role of conventional sources.
Net hydropower production amounted to 726 GWh in January 2026, marking a significant 49.7% increase compared to January 2024, highlighting strong hydro conditions in the period. In contrast, thermal power production declined to 601 GWh, which is 19.2% lower than in the previous year, indicating reduced reliance on fossil-based generation.
Electricity generation from renewable sources such as wind and solar reached 78 GWh, representing a 3.7% decrease year-on-year, suggesting some variability in non-hydro renewable output despite overall hydro strength.
On the trade side, electricity imports decreased by 11.6% to 381 GWh, down from 431 GWh in January 2025, while exports also declined by 3.1% to 563 GWh, compared to 581 GWh in the same period last year, pointing to a slight contraction in cross-border activity.
In the coal sector, lignite production in BiH amounted to 501,000 tons in January 2026, showing a marginal 0.4% decrease year-on-year, while brown coal production dropped more sharply by 40.8% to 266,000 tons, indicating a significant decline in this segment.
Natural gas imports increased to 36.08 million cubic meters in January 2026, up 5.9% compared to 34.08 million cubic meters in the same month last year, reflecting slightly higher gas demand in the country.
