A new two-year initiative to shape Bosnia and Herzegovina’s hydrogen future has entered its implementation phase after project partners met in Sarajevo. The program centers on creating a national hydrogen strategy and transferring technical expertise, linking domestic energy stakeholders with international partners. It is being implemented by Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (H2OIE), EPBiH and Energoinvest, together with Green Sustainable Solutions. Financial and institutional support comes from the Central European Initiative and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
During the inaugural session, participants exchanged regional experiences and explored practical pathways for introducing hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen was presented not as a short-term trend but as a long-term tool for boosting energy resilience, industrial competitiveness and alignment with European climate and energy frameworks. A major goal is to strengthen domestic knowledge and institutional capacity for the gradual and sustainable rollout of hydrogen solutions through workshops, advisory missions and study visits across Europe.
The partners will also prepare a National Hydrogen Strategy and a detailed roadmap to help companies and institutions assess technical potential, limits and priority areas. With strong renewable resources, an established industrial base and a favorable location, the country sees hydrogen as a strategic opportunity to decarbonize industry, improve energy security and integrate more deeply into the European energy market. By merging local expertise with international cooperation, this project marks the first coordinated effort to systematically advance hydrogen development and position it as a core pillar of long-term energy and economic planning.
