The Republic of Srpska (RS) has approved a gasification project for the eastern part of the RS, with an allocated budget of 37 million euros. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy and Mining will oversee its implementation, while Sarajevo-Gas from Istočno Sarajevo is responsible for executing the project according to regulations.
The project is divided into three phases, two of which have already been completed:
- Phase 1: This phase involved constructing a metering and regulation station for Toplane-INS and converting boiler systems to use natural gas instead of environmentally harmful fuel oil. Additionally, the distribution network was expanded in Istočno Novo Sarajevo and Istočna Ilidža. The commissioning of a gas-powered heating plant in Istočno Sarajevo enabled the heating of 70,000 square meters of residential space, 900 apartments, and 30 institutions, with the boiler capacity increased from 8 MW to 20 MW.
- Phase 2: This phase focused on the construction of the Pale-Jahorina gas pipeline, which supplies natural gas to the municipalities of Pale and Jahorina.
- Phase 3: The third phase will involve the construction of a main gas pipeline running 48 kilometers from the Jakovice transfer station in Sekovici to Vlasenica, Milici, Igrista, and Han Pijesak. The estimated cost of this phase is 37 million euros.
The gasification project aims to provide natural gas to all public institutions and industrial consumers in the region. It is expected to reduce electricity consumption, potentially creating opportunities to sell surplus electricity at higher prices. Additionally, using natural gas for heating will reduce harmful gas emissions, contributing to environmental protection.
