The Republic of Srpska (RS) is evaluating further energy investments in the Bileća area, including the potential construction of a new hydropower plant, Energy and Mining Minister Petar Đokić said during a visit to the municipality. He emphasized that the region remains strategically important for the development of the entity’s energy infrastructure.
According to Đokić, approximately €70 million has been invested in local energy projects over the past decade, while additional investments are currently being planned. He noted that the Dabar hydropower plant remains one of the most significant ongoing projects in the region and is expected to enter operation next year, provided construction progresses according to schedule.
The minister also announced plans for several large-scale solar energy projects in the Bileća area, although no specific details regarding capacity or timelines were provided. These initiatives are expected to complement the region’s existing hydro-dominated energy mix.
Speaking more broadly about the energy sector, Đokić highlighted that the Gacko thermal power plant, which has been in operation for more than 40 years, will eventually require replacement. While new generation projects are under consideration, plans for an additional thermal unit remain part of ongoing discussions.
He added that total investment in the Republic of Srpska’s energy sector has reached approximately €1.4 billion over the past 11 years, underscoring the scale of long-term infrastructure development in the region.
