According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), gross electricity production in the country amounted to 988 GWh in April 2026, compared with 1,205 GWh in the same month last year.
In the overall production mix, hydropower plants accounted for 48.8%, thermal power plants for 38.5%, while solar and wind energy contributed 12.7% of total generation.
Net production from hydropower plants reached 477 GWh in April 2026, which is 7.7% higher year-on-year. In contrast, thermal power output fell sharply to 338 GWh, representing a 40.5% decline compared to April 2025. Electricity generation from renewable sources (wind and solar) increased to 126 GWh, marking an 18.9% annual rise.
On the trade side, electricity imports increased by 11.5% to 455 GWh, up from 408 GWh a year earlier, while exports decreased by 14.1% to 575 GWh, compared with 669 GWh in April 2025.
In fuel production, lignite output in BiH totaled 440,000 tons in April 2026, down 28.1% year-on-year, while brown coal production fell by 23.4% to 292,000 tons.
Meanwhile, natural gas imports rose to 18.92 million cubic meters in April 2026, an increase of 8.5% compared with 17.43 million cubic meters in the same period last year.
