Turkish company Europower Enerji has been selected as the preferred bidder for the construction of the Gračanica solar power project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking another step in the country’s gradual expansion of renewable energy capacity.
The company’s offer of €26.9 million was ranked the most competitive in an international tender conducted under the procurement rules of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Europower Enerji has now been invited to sign the contract, although the award is still subject to the completion of final procedural steps.
The project is being developed by the state-owned utility EPBiH, with financing support from the EBRD. It includes the construction of two solar power plants, Gračanica 1 and Gračanica 2, with a combined installed capacity of 50 MW. The scope of works also covers a new 110/20 kV substation, as well as the transmission infrastructure required to connect the facilities to the national grid.
The solar plants will be built near Bugojno, on the site of a former mining area, reflecting the broader regional trend of repurposing industrial land for renewable energy development. According to earlier EBRD estimates, the two plants are expected to generate approximately 67.75 GWh of electricity per year, enough to supply around 22,000 households.
Once operational, the project is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40,000 tons annually, contributing to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s gradual decarbonisation of its power sector. The Gracanica scheme is also part of a wider pipeline of renewable investments being developed by EPBiH, as the utility continues to expand its solar generation portfolio and diversify away from conventional thermal sources.
