A long-standing financial dispute has been successfully resolved after the coalmine and thermal power plant RiTE Ugljevik and Elektrogospodarstvo Slovenije (EGS) signed a new agreement addressing all remaining obligations. The deal, worth approximately 37 million euros, marks the final step in settling the debt between the two parties and brings closure to a complex case.
With this agreement in place, both sides have decided to withdraw from a potential arbitration process in Washington, which had posed a serious financial risk. The dispute carried the possibility of escalating into a claim of nearly 650 million euros, but has now been fully resolved through negotiated terms, avoiding prolonged legal uncertainty.
The origins of the dispute stem from earlier rulings requiring RiTE Ugljevik to compensate the Slovenian partner for undelivered electricity over a long period. These obligations covered missed supply from 2011 to early 2022, along with additional compensation for subsequent years. The agreement also ensures that a portion of the plant’s ongoing electricity production will continue to be delivered to the Slovenian side.
Although most of the principal debt and compensation had been settled in prior arrangements, the issue of accrued interest remained unresolved. This final agreement addresses that component, including a reduction in the originally claimed amount, allowing both parties to fully close the case.
The payment plan is already underway, with initial installments being transferred. At the same time, electricity deliveries to the Slovenian partner have been ongoing since early 2024, in accordance with earlier commitments. All obligations are secured by the parent utility company, ensuring stability and enforcement of the agreement.
