Bulgaria’s Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (KEVR) has approved a 5.1% increase in the wholesale natural gas price for April 2026, aligning with the proposal submitted by public supplier Bulgargaz in mid-March. The approved price rises to 34.27 euros/MWh, excluding VAT and excise duties. In comparison, KEVR had previously approved a more modest 0.9% increase for March.
Despite the increase, the new price remains significantly more competitive than those observed on major European trading hubs. It is roughly 20 euros/MWh lower than international market quotations, providing a more favorable outcome for both households and businesses in Bulgaria compared to broader regional pricing trends.
The difference is especially evident at the Dutch TTF hub, Europe’s primary gas benchmark, where prices have surged in recent days to around 54 euros/MWh. This highlights the gap between Bulgaria’s regulated pricing approach and prevailing wholesale market conditions across Europe.
The April price also compares favorably with the same period last year. Historical data indicate that the current level is about 10.7% lower than in April 2025, when natural gas in Bulgaria was priced at 38.39 euros/MWh.
Overall, despite the monthly increase, Bulgaria’s pricing structure continues to offer relative stability and protection from the short-term volatility seen on European gas markets.
