In a shift toward modern procurement practices, Bulgarian natural gas transmission system operator Bulgartransgaz has opted to source gas for its operational needs through a competitive LNG-focused tender. This marks the first time the company is turning to liquefied natural gas procurement to meet the technical requirements of its transmission network.
The planned purchase will cover the period from July 2026 to September 2027, during which approximately 1.5 million MWh of LNG is expected to be secured. These volumes are intended exclusively for maintaining the stability and functioning of Bulgaria’s gas transmission infrastructure.
Delivery will be carried out via the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal, a strategic asset in which Bulgartransgaz holds a stake. This facility is expected to play a central logistical role in handling incoming LNG cargoes under the tender arrangement.
Participation in the process will be restricted to companies with proven expertise in LNG trading and delivery. Suppliers will need to pass a prequalification phase managed by the platform operator and confirm that the gas originates from non-sanctioned jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with international regulations.
According to CEO Vladimir Malinov, the initiative aims to establish a transparent and reliable procurement framework aligned with European standards. He emphasized that sourcing LNG from trusted partners, including the United States and other stable exporters, represents a key step toward diversifying supply routes and strengthening energy security both in Bulgaria and across the broader region.
