Extensive rehabilitation works are advancing at the Chaira Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant, according to Traicho Traikov, who visited the facility over the weekend to review the progress on site.
During the inspection, the caretaker Energy Minister stated that refurbishment of unit 2 is nearly complete, while unit 3 is expected to return to operation in early April. He also confirmed that a contract has already been signed for the repair of unit 1. The fourth unit, however, remains the most complex part of the project due to substantial technical challenges.
Minister Traikov has instructed the preparation of a comprehensive restoration schedule, detailing the sequence and timeline of the remaining works. This plan will be made publicly available. He noted that the plant had been operating in solid technical condition around 16 years ago, but equipment failures in 2022 led to the current large-scale repair phase. He expressed confidence that the rehabilitation is proceeding in a structured and methodical way, supported by a clear roadmap aimed at restoring the plant’s full operational capacity.
