Electricity production in Bulgaria between 1 January and 21 May 2023 has decreased by 21% compared to 2022 and reached 16.95 TWh. Electricity consumption decreased in the same period by 5%, to 15.47 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO.
Surplus electricity amounted to 1.5 TWh in 2023, 71% less than in 2022. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced 14 TWh of electricity in 2023, 22% less than in 2022.
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in the transmission network rose by 20 % to 765 GWh, while RES share in the distribution network decreased by 3% to 884 GWh.
