The data from the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO for the period between January 1 and December 1, 2024, shows several key trends in electricity production, consumption, and exports:
- Electricity production: Bulgaria’s total electricity production decreased by 5.65% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 34.27 TWh.
- Electricity consumption: In contrast, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption increased by 0.54% in the same period, totaling 33.16 TWh.
- Net exports: The country experienced a significant reduction in electricity exports, which amounted to 1.11 TWh, a 66.9% decrease compared to 2023.
- Baseload power plants: Coal and nuclear power plants, which provide baseload energy, generated 25.22 TWh of electricity in 2024, representing a 12.3% decrease compared to the previous year.
- Renewable energy sources (RES):
- The share of electricity produced from RES in the transmission network increased by 34.2%, totaling 3,152.1 GWh.
- The share of RES in the distribution network rose by a similar 34.29%, reaching 3,112.9 GWh.
These figures highlight a trend towards a growing share of electricity generation from renewable sources, despite an overall decrease in total electricity production and a significant drop in net exports.
