According to data released by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2024, decreased by 4.98% compared to 2023, totaling 37.96 TWh. During the same period, electricity consumption in Bulgaria increased by 0.97%, reaching 36.94 TWh. As a result, net electricity exports were 1.02 TWh in 2024, marking a 69.6% decline compared to the previous year.
Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) generated a total of 28.46 TWh of electricity in 2024, which is 10.7% less than in 2023. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network increased by 32.21%, reaching 3,326.4 GWh, while the RES share in the country’s distribution network rose by 32.48% to 3,293.5 GWh.
