Bulgaria has taken a further step to secure its natural gas supply for the upcoming heating season, as state-owned supplier Bulgargaz has launched a new tender for liquefied natural gas (LNG) aimed at strategic storage.
The company is seeking an LNG cargo equivalent to 1 million MWh, with delivery planned for the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal in Greece in early July. After regasification, the gas will be transported and stored at Bulgaria’s Chiren underground gas storage facility.
The planned procurement is intended to strengthen national reserves ahead of the 2026–2027 winter season, ensuring sufficient volumes are available during peak demand periods.
To secure competitive offers, Bulgargaz has invited 40 international producers and trading companies to participate in the tender. All selected participants have previously expressed interest in supplying the Bulgarian market and have successfully completed the company’s qualification and approval process.
The purchase is part of a broader supply strategy introduced by Bulgargaz in September 2025. Through this framework, the company is gradually building up gas inventories and diversifying procurement sources in order to improve supply security and reduce exposure to price volatility during the winter months.
