A new all-time high record of electricity production was achieved by Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy. In 2020 the plant produced a total of 16.63 TWh of electricity.
Previous record was set in 2019 with 16.56 TWh. The statement from the plant said that, despite the extraordinary operational conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic, it remained the leading producer of electricity in the country. The updated business plan for the 2020-2024 period, approved by the management in mid-October, envisages investments of more than 370 million euros in the plant, which will be fully provided from the plant’s own resources. It is envisaged that NPP Kozluduy will increase its annual output by 1 % in the next few years.
Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet-built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
