Bulgarian Ministry of Energy announced that, on 30 December, the country’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy signed an agreement with French Framatome on the supply of fresh nuclear fuel for its 1,000 MW unit 6.

Since the deal for the supply of fuel for unit 5 was signed with Westinghouse Sweden earlier in December, the plant has completed all the necessary steps to diversify away from current Russian supplier TVEL.

The statement from the Ministry said that the agreement maps out the timeline for future negotiations and the signing of a contract for up to twelve nuclear fuel reloads for the period 2025- 2034.

Framatome, controlled by French state-owned utility EDF, produces cartridges with fresh nuclear fuel, which are equivalent to the cartridges used in NPP Kozloduy’s unit 6. The contract was signed with German subsidiary of Framatome.
