According to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, production of electricity in Bulgaria in the period
between 1 January and 17 October 2021 has increased by 14.75 % compared to the same period in 2020 and reached 36.46 TWh.
In addition, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption rose in the same period, by 4.98 % reaching a total of 30.26 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 6.19 TWh so far in 2021, 110.13 % more than in the same period in 2020. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 29.54 TWh of electricity in 2021 so far, which is 12.34 % more than in 2020.
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network dropped by 5.57 % to 1,025.4 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network decreased by 1.92 % to 1,594.8 GWh.
