According to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, production of electricity in Bulgaria in the period
between 1 January and 31 December 2021 has increased by 17.09 % compared to 2020 and reached 47.7 TWh.
In addition, Bulgaria’s electricity consumption rose in the same period, by 4.24 % reaching a total of 38.88 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 8.82 TWh in 2021, 156.5 % more than in the in 2020. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 39.36 TWh of electricity in 2021, which is 15.42 % more than in 2020.
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network dropped by 3.03 % to 1,286 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network increased by 0.66 % to 1,929.5 GWh.
