According to data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria increased by 3.18% during the period from 1 January to 31 May 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, reaching a total of 18.34 TWh.
Electricity consumption also recorded significant growth, rising by 6.97% year-on-year to 18.04 TWh. As a result, Bulgaria remained a net electricity exporter, with net exports totaling 296 GWh during the first five months of the year.
Electricity generation from baseload power plants, including coal-fired and nuclear facilities, amounted to 12.18 TWh, representing a decrease of 10.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2025. The decline highlights the growing role of alternative energy sources in the country’s power mix.
Meanwhile, renewable energy sources continued to expand their contribution to electricity generation. Power production from renewable energy sources (RES) connected to the transmission network increased by 14% to 1,622.9 GWh. At the same time, electricity generated from RES connected to the distribution network rose by 5.21%, reaching 1,594.7 GWh.
The latest figures indicate that Bulgaria is experiencing growth in both electricity production and demand, while renewable energy continues to strengthen its position within the national energy system.
