Bulgarian renewable energy developer Sunotec has connected a 150 MW/379 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Brusartsi, further strengthening the country’s rapidly expanding energy storage fleet.
The project is Sunotec’s second large-scale battery installation to enter operation in Bulgaria within just a few weeks. In July, the company commissioned a 50 MW/126 MWh BESS in Byala Slatina. Combined, the two projects provide 200 MW of power capacity and 505 MWh of storage capacity.
Both facilities will be operated in partnership with Slovenian energy trader GEN-I, which will be responsible for electricity trading and optimization of the battery systems.
Sunotec is already preparing further projects as part of its expansion in Bulgaria. The company has nine additional BESS projects totaling 195 MW/782 MWh under development across the country, with commercial operation expected within the next 12 months.
The expansion comes amid a broader battery storage investment boom in Bulgaria, supported partly by funding under the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. By early June, Bulgaria had installed around 4,011 MW/12,240 MWh of battery storage capacity, including 3,471 MW/10,768 MWh connected to the grid.
The country’s battery storage fleet is expected to surpass 6 GW/18 GWh by the end of 2026, highlighting Bulgaria’s growing role as a major energy storage market in Southeast Europe.
