Operations at unit 6 of Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy have been temporarily halted to allow for the replacement of protective membrane components within the turbine system’s moisture separator reheaters. The intervention concerns equipment situated in the conventional section of the unit. The reactor was taken offline on 3 March as part of the scheduled technical work.
The new membrane devices are produced from the same type of materials as those originally installed. Independent laboratory analyses have verified that the components comply fully with established quality and safety standards. Once the maintenance procedures are finalized, the unit is expected to resume electricity generation and reconnect to the national transmission network.
Last month, NPP Kozloduy’s CEO Ivan Andreev addressed the financial implications of two unplanned outages of unit 6 that occurred in December 2025 and February 2026. He stated that the unrealized revenue from electricity not produced during those interruptions is estimated at 9 million euros. However, he emphasized that this figure should not be interpreted as a direct financial loss. A portion of the shortfall is expected to be compensated by adjusting and prolonging the unit’s regular annual maintenance schedule.
