Turkish renewable developer Defic Globe is preparing two battery-storage projects alongside operational solar plants near Caracal in Romania’s Olt county, expanding a portfolio that has grown rapidly since the company entered the market.
Each battery will have an installed power rating of 5 MW. They will be paired with photovoltaic plants of 6.89 MW and 7.26 MW, giving the batteries relatively high power capacity compared with the generation assets. The energy capacity in megawatt-hours has not yet been disclosed, leaving the intended storage duration and complete investment envelope unclear.
The projects are being developed through Future PV, a subsidiary of Defic Globe Enerji. Romanian licensing procedures generally require evidence that financing is available before construction approval, making the financing package an important threshold for moving the batteries into implementation.
Defic Globe completed its first Romanian investment, an 18 MW solar plant in Caracal, before opening a Bucharest office at the end of 2024. It subsequently acquired 15 project companies with a combined renewable pipeline of 219 MW and plans for approximately 320 MWh of battery storage.
That acquisition increased the group’s Romanian development portfolio to around 590 MW. Majority shareholder YEO Technology valued the investment platform at approximately €220 million.
The company is also developing two solar projects totalling 21.3 MW at Bobicești and has entered partnerships covering larger portfolios. These include 129 MW with Shanghai Electric Power and 190 MW with Norway’s Scatec. The Scatec-linked portfolio represents investment of approximately €140 million, with contracts for difference covering 70 per cent of its capacity.
The Caracal batteries are smaller than these development platforms but commercially relevant because they are being added to operating solar assets. Their performance will provide Defic Globe with direct evidence on dispatch, degradation, imbalance reduction and market revenues before it deploys the much larger 320 MWh storage pipeline.
