Engie Romania has acquired a 54 MW/216 MWh battery project at Calan, lifting its planned Romanian storage portfolio to around 140 MW/386 MWh as the utility expands investment in flexibility assets.
The Calan project, located in Hunedoara county, is designed to provide four hours of storage at full output and is scheduled for commissioning in January 2029.
It joins an 80 MW/160 MWh battery under development at Selimbar in Sibiu county and a 5 MW/10 MWh installation at Baleni in Galati county.
The Baleni battery will operate alongside Engie’s existing 50 MW wind farm, creating what the group describes as its first hybrid wind-and-storage project in Europe.
Engie’s Romanian programme forms part of a larger battery expansion across Europe.
During July and August, the company progressed battery acquisitions, construction and commissioning activities in Romania, Poland, Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain representing approximately 1.1 GW of power capacity and 3.3 GWh of storage.
The company is expanding storage as growing wind and solar output increases the need to absorb surplus electricity, shift production into higher-value demand periods and provide balancing services.
The programme also supports Engie’s global target of reaching 95 GW of combined renewable and storage capacity by 2030.
