The European Union is preparing a sustainability rating system for data centres above 500 kW, seeking clearer measures of a sector whose capacity it expects to roughly triple within five to seven years.
The proposed ratings would cover electricity and water use, renewable power and waste-heat recovery. The European Parliament and Council have two months to review the delegated regulation. If adopted, the first labels could appear in 2027.
Brussels is separately considering minimum performance standards, with a proposal expected in the second quarter of 2027. For operators and power suppliers, the ratings would put the energy demands of new computing capacity under closer scrutiny as grid connections become a bigger constraint on expansion.
