EVN North Macedonia has commissioned the largest licensed battery energy storage system currently in operation in the country, marking a further step in North Macedonia’s transition toward renewable energy integration.
The new facility, located alongside the company’s solar power plant in Probištip, has an installed capacity of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 20 MWh of electricity. According to the company, there are already plans to expand the project in a later phase, which would double total storage capacity to 40 MWh.
The system is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology and combines battery units supplied by CATL with an energy conversion system developed by K Star. EVN North Macedonia, part of the Austrian energy group EVN, stated that the battery system has been integrated with its Probištip solar plant to improve the flexibility, stability, and efficiency of renewable electricity production.
The commissioning of this storage facility reflects a broader trend of rising investment in battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the region, as utilities increasingly seek solutions to stabilize power systems and manage growing volumes of intermittent renewable generation.
