GEN-I Invest is expanding its presence in Southeast Europe’s battery storage sector through the acquisition of three new projects in Bulgaria, marking its first direct energy storage investments outside Slovenia. The assets are located in Belovo, Momchilgrad, and Parvomay, and together provide a combined capacity of 30 MW and 76 MWh.
With this transaction, GEN-I Invest’s owned storage portfolio increases to 42 MW and 100 MWh, including its existing 12 MW / 24 MWh battery facility near Talum in Slovenia. The move represents a gradual but clear shift from service-based involvement in storage optimization toward direct asset ownership in regional flexibility infrastructure.
Beyond ownership, the company also plays a broader role in battery system optimization and operational management. While many of its managed storage assets remain third-party owned, GEN-I is positioning itself as both an operator and increasingly an investor in storage capacity across multiple markets.
The company’s regional ambitions extend significantly beyond this initial expansion. GEN-I expects the total battery storage capacity it manages in Bulgaria and Romania to reach around 800 MW this year, reflecting rapid growth in market demand for flexibility services across SEE power systems.
In parallel, GEN-I has indicated plans to further scale its investment footprint, targeting the acquisition of additional projects totaling approximately 100 MW of new storage capacity by the end of the year. This strategy underscores the accelerating role of battery storage not only as a technical solution for grid balancing, but also as a core investment class within the region’s evolving electricity markets.
