In lignite-dependent regions according to Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE, it has received network connection applications for a total of 4.5 GW in renewable energy capacity (including hydropower).
All applications are related to new capacities in lignite-dependent areas where coal is being phased out as part of the country’s decarbonization efforts. The regions of western Macedonia and Megalopoli in Peloponnese are Greece’s main suppliers of lignite and will be the most affected by the phase-out.
The overall capacity includes 96 applications, of which 92 relate to solar projects, while the rest comes from wind, solar-wind or small hydropower plants.
PPC Renewables, a renewables arm of Public Power Corporation (PPC), is seeking to connect about 1.9 GW of new renewable generation capacity in Kozani and Florina in western Macedonia through 19 projects. Among its applications is a 550 MW solar power plant in Ptolemaida.
