Greece has officially commissioned a new high-pressure natural gas pipeline in Western Macedonia, marking a significant expansion of the national gas transmission network and improving energy access in the northern part of the country.
The infrastructure was developed by the gas transmission system operator DESFA and is valued at approximately €188 million. It includes a 157-kilometer transmission pipeline extending through Central Macedonia to Kardia, strengthening the backbone of Greece’s gas infrastructure.
The pipeline is designed to support the operation of a new combined heat and power (CHP) facility being developed by Public Power Corporation (PPC). The plant will supply district heating systems in Kozani, Ptolemaida, and Amyntaio, helping to replace older lignite-based heating solutions in the region.
This investment represents the largest recent expansion of Greece’s national gas transmission system and is expected to significantly enhance energy connectivity in areas that previously lacked direct access to natural gas infrastructure.
According to DESFA, the project will play a key role in supporting the energy transition in Western Macedonia, particularly as the region continues its shift away from lignite-fired electricity generation. It is also expected to improve overall energy supply security while opening additional opportunities for industrial and municipal gas consumption across Central and Western Macedonia.
