According to data published by the Hungarian Energy and Utilities Regulatory Office (MEKH), the daily average of domestic natural gas consumption decreased significantly in September compared to the previous four-year period, thus accelerating the adjustment of demand to high natural gas prices.

In September, natural gas consumption in Hungary was 4.4 TWh, which is 9 % less year-on- year, with peak day consumption at 197 GWh, the lowest since 2016. Consumption in the residential segment of the universal service fell by 18 %, the non-residential segment by 25 % and consumption of power plants dropped by 3 % compared to the same month of 2021.

Consumption in the category which represents less temperature-dependent industrial use, fell by 37 %, which can be seen as a demand-reducing effect of high prices.
