One of Europe’s largest gas-fired power projects is entering its final development phase, as construction of the Mintia power plant in western Romania has now surpassed 80% completion. According to Romanian authorities, the project has reached approximately 83% completion, supported by investments exceeding 1.2 billion euros.
Once the first phase becomes operational, the facility is expected to add around 1.7 GW of capacity to Romania’s national electricity system. This would significantly strengthen domestic generation and improve supply stability at a time when the country continues to face tight electricity market conditions and elevated power prices.
The project’s strategic importance is further reinforced by expectations of future gas output from the Neptun Deep offshore project, which is planned for later this decade. This development is expected to enhance the economic viability of new gas-fired generation in the region.
During a recent site visit, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan met with representatives of the developer Mass Global Energy Rom as well as officials from transmission system operators Transgaz and Transelectrica. Discussions focused on the remaining milestones required before the plant can enter commercial operation.
A key step in the commissioning process is scheduled for June, when testing of the connection between the power plant and its associated substation is expected to begin. Network integration will then continue in phases through October, as the facility is gradually synchronized with Romania’s electricity grid.
Authorities have stated that gas supply infrastructure must be ready by August, while the first electricity generation is currently planned for September 2026. Officials stressed the importance of close coordination among all stakeholders to avoid delays during testing and commissioning.
The government considers the Mintia investment strategically important for strengthening national energy security, diversifying the electricity mix, and supporting regional economic development in Hunedoara County. Once fully completed, the TPP Mintia project is expected to become the largest single-site gas-fired power plant in the European Union, representing a major addition to Europe’s energy infrastructure.
