Electricity generation in Montenegro rose by 25% in 2023, compared to the previous year, to 4,043 GWh, according to the Ministry of Energy. In the same period, consumption increased by 3% to 3,179 GWh. Last year’s total electricity generation was 12% higher than planned.
The electricity produced from renewable energy sources increased by 42% to 2,520 GWh, while the electricity produced by coal-fired TPP Pljevlja increased by 5% to 1,523 GWh. In 2023, HPP Perucica generated 1,039 GWh of electricity, which is an increase of 45% compared to 2022, while HPP Piva increased its production by 67% to 933 GWh.
Small hydropower plants produced 226 GWh of electricity in 2023 (+32%). Electricity produced by wind farms fell by 4% to 310 GWh, while solar electricity generation rose to 13 GWh last year from just 4 GWh in 2022.
In 2023, the loss in the electricity distribution network was unchanged from the previous year and stood at 474 GWh.
