A large-scale solar project planned near Nikšić has advanced to the next phase after Montenegro’s Environmental Protection Agency approved the environmental impact documentation for the Tupan solar power plant, removing a key regulatory barrier for the investment.
The project is being developed by local company S2P Tupan and is designed to reach an installed capacity of 90 MW. With the agency confirming that the environmental impact assessment complies with national regulations, the investor is now a step closer to moving the project toward full implementation.
In its decision, the agency noted that the submitted study includes the necessary environmental safeguards and mitigation measures. These requirements will apply throughout both the construction and operational phases, as well as in the event of any incidents. The approval also mandates the implementation of an environmental monitoring program once the project moves forward.
The future solar plant will be located across multiple cadastral plots in the Tupan area within the municipality of Nikšić. According to project documentation, the installation will cover approximately 156 hectares, with photovoltaic modules mounted on steel support structures designed to maximize energy generation efficiency throughout the year.
The planned facility will include 129,408 solar panels. Based on the layout and spacing, the modules themselves are expected to cover around 876,770 square meters, which represents approximately 56% of the total project area, reflecting a carefully optimized land use design.
The site will be divided into 13 separate sections, each equipped with its own 0.8/35 kV transformer station. In total, the project foresees 13 prefabricated substations, each with a capacity of 6.6 MVA, ensuring efficient power collection and distribution within the plant.
Initial groundwork for the project began in October 2023, when the Montenegrin Government issued urban and technical conditions for the investment to German company SP2 Electric. With the environmental approval now secured, the Tupan solar project has moved significantly closer to becoming a fully operational renewable energy facility.
