Nofar Energy has commissioned more than 315 MW of solar capacity in Romania through the Iepuresti and Ghimpati projects, following total investment of about €250 million.
The Iepuresti plant has 169.4 MW of capacity and is currently Romania’s largest operating solar facility. Ghimpati adds a further 146 MW.
Together, the two plants are expected to generate around 430 GWh annually, equivalent to the electricity use of more than 250,000 households. Their output is projected to avoid approximately 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
Commercial operation followed network certification and regulatory approvals. The plants were built in parallel over about two years.
Financing included a €110 million package agreed in August 2024 with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Raiffeisen Bank International, partly backed by an EU InvestEU guarantee.
Nofar is now developing a combined 280 MW/860 MWh battery portfolio at the sites. The storage systems would allow solar generation to be shifted into higher-priced periods and give the projects a stronger role in balancing the grid.
Since entering Romania in 2021, Nofar has assembled a portfolio of around 800 MW of solar and approximately 1.9 GWh of storage across operating, construction and development assets.
The solar plants mark a major capacity addition, but the planned batteries may determine their longer-term value as Romania’s growing photovoltaic fleet puts increasing pressure on midday prices.
