North Macedonia’s OKTA has started operating battery storage alongside its 12 MW solar plant, marking the company’s first move into electricity storage.
Two battery containers have entered operation and a third is scheduled to be commissioned in the coming months.
Once completed, the installation will provide around 3 MW of power and 6 MWh of storage capacity. OKTA estimates the system could store about 2,100 MWh of electricity over a year.
The battery will allow solar production to be shifted from periods of high generation into hours with stronger demand or more favourable market prices, giving the plant greater control over its wholesale-market exposure.
For OKTA, traditionally associated with petroleum supply and conventional energy infrastructure, the project also represents a broader move into renewable generation and flexibility assets.
