Located approximately six kilometres from the Bor–Žagubica main road, in one of the most challenging mountainous areas of eastern Serbia, transmission grid connection PRP Crni Vrh 1 has become one of the country’s most advanced high-voltage switching and connection facilities. Built to the highest international engineering standards, the installation forms an integral part of the Crni Vrh Wind Farm complex and provides the critical interface through which renewable electricity generated by the wind farm is delivered into Serbia’s national transmission system.
Constructed during 2024, PRP Crni Vrh 1 represents a significant investment in strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure while supporting the accelerated integration of renewable energy. Beyond serving as the grid connection point for a single wind project, the facility has been designed as a long-term strategic transmission node capable of accommodating future renewable developments across eastern Serbia.
The switching station comprises twelve 110 kV bays, with ten currently fully equipped and operational. The installed configuration includes three 33/110 kV transformer bays, six transmission line bays, and one bus-coupler bay. Following comprehensive testing, protection verification and commissioning activities, the installation was successfully energized in November 2024, completing one of Serbia’s most sophisticated renewable energy grid connection projects.
To integrate PRP Crni Vrh 1 into the national transmission system, substantial modifications were carried out on the existing DV 150, DV 177/2, and DV 122B transmission lines, which were rerouted and introduced into the new switching station. These works significantly enhanced network flexibility, improved operational security and created additional transmission capacity for future renewable generation.
Today, PRP Crni Vrh 1 functions as an important transmission hub linking the Bor 1, Petrovac, Majdanpek 1, and Majdanpek 2 substations. This strategic position increases the reliability of electricity supply throughout eastern Serbia while improving the transmission system’s ability to accommodate growing volumes of variable renewable generation.
Its importance will continue to expand with the planned connection of the Jasikovo Wind Farm, currently under construction. Once operational, PRP Crni Vrh 1 will become the common transmission interface for multiple utility-scale wind farms, creating one of Serbia’s largest renewable energy clusters. Such a concentration of renewable generation requires highly reliable grid infrastructure, advanced protection systems, sophisticated automation and sufficient transmission capacity—all of which have been incorporated into the facility’s design. A major milestone was achieved in late February 2026, when the first kilowatt-hours of electricity generated by the Crni Vrh Wind Farm were successfully injected into Serbia’s transmission network through PRP Crni Vrh 1. This marked the beginning of commercial renewable electricity delivery from one of Serbia’s largest new wind energy projects and confirmed the operational readiness of both the wind farm and its associated transmission infrastructure.
The Crni Vrh Wind Farm, with an installed capacity of 150 MW, is one of Serbia’s flagship renewable energy investments. Developed by Crni Vrh Power d.o.o. (CVP) and backed by Shanghai Fengling Renewables Co., Ltd. as the principal investor, the project encompasses wind turbines, internal collector systems, substations, transmission infrastructure and grid connection facilities designed to deliver clean electricity into the national power system. Throughout the development, construction, energization and commissioning phases, the investor has been supported by Clarion.Engineer, acting as the Owner’s Engineer (OE) and providing independent technical representation across all project stages. Working alongside the appointed Supervision Engineer, the Owner’s Engineer has overseen technical due diligence, construction quality, compliance with Serbian regulations, engineering documentation, commissioning readiness, grid connection activities, contract administration and technical risk management. This independent oversight has provided an additional layer of quality assurance, supporting the investor throughout construction and ensuring that the project progresses toward full commercial operation in accordance with international engineering standards, lender expectations and the performance requirements established under the EPC contract.
Beyond enabling the evacuation of renewable electricity, PRP Crni Vrh 1 strengthens voltage stability, improves transmission system reliability and provides additional network capacity for future renewable energy investments across eastern Serbia. As Serbia continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, transmission facilities such as PRP Crni Vrh 1 become equally as important as the generating assets themselves, providing the infrastructure necessary to integrate intermittent wind generation while maintaining system security and operational stability.
The completion of PRP Crni Vrh 1 therefore represents far more than the construction of a new high-voltage switching station. It establishes a modern transmission platform supporting Serbia’s long-term energy transition, facilitating future renewable investments and reinforcing the resilience of the national electricity system. With additional renewable projects expected to connect over the coming years, PRP Crni Vrh 1 is set to become one of the country’s most strategically important transmission hubs for the integration of clean energy.
