HEP’s expert advisory body analyzed the previous studies of hydro power plant Ombla project and concluded that there is no danger regarding the construction of this unique facility in the world. The analysis was carried out by experts in geology, hydrogeology, geo-technics, seismology and engineering from Macedonia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The results were presented at the University of Dubrovnik.
Prof. dr. Tatiana Vlahovic from the Split Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy said that with the use of modern technologies it is possible to reject even the slightest doubt in connection with the feasibility of closing active or inactive underground karst canals, which has been the biggest challenge of the project execution so far. She added that HPP Ombla is an interesting and innovative project from engineering point of view, that will result in the production of electricity from renewable energy sources and improving the water supply of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area.
After the presentation there were a number of questions from environmental activist organizations from Dubrovnik and Rijeka Dubrovacka which were generally against this project, and which expressed dissatisfaction with the study of environmental impacts and concerns that due to possible earthquakes, major problem with the project could arrise.
