Romania’s residential photovoltaic market continued to expand during the first half of 2026, with E.ON Energie Romania installing more than 1,200 rooftop systems through its Solar Home programme.
Installations increased by 30% year on year, taking the cumulative number delivered since the programme began in 2020 to more than 10,500 systems.
The more significant change is occurring behind the solar panels. Battery storage was included in only about 10% of E.ON’s household projects in previous years, but the share rose to 91% during the first six months of 2026.
The increase suggests that Romanian households are moving from simple grid-connected generation towards integrated energy systems designed to maximise self-consumption. A battery allows surplus midday solar power to be used during evening hours, reducing exposure to retail electricity prices and dependence on the distribution network.
Consumer interest remains strong despite the absence of a new funding round under Romania’s Green House photovoltaic programme. A June survey commissioned by E.ON found that 17% of respondents intend to install solar panels during the next year, unchanged from the previous survey.
The proportion of surveyed households already using rooftop photovoltaics increased from 8% to 11% in one year. Another 15% of respondents said they were considering purchasing a home battery, while more than half of existing solar owners planned to add storage within the following 12 months.
The expansion of distributed storage has implications beyond household electricity bills. Aggregated batteries could eventually provide flexibility to distribution networks and reduce evening demand peaks, although this will require appropriate metering, control systems and market rules.
For installers and equipment suppliers, the shift from solar-only packages to combined photovoltaic and battery systems increases the value of each project. It also raises requirements for system design, inverter compatibility, fire safety, commissioning and long-term warranty management.
