According to data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), net coal production in Romania during the first two months of 2026 totaled 244,400 tons of oil equivalent, representing a decline of 26.1% (−86,400 tons) compared to the same period in 2025.
During the January–February period, Romania imported 20,700 tons of oil equivalent of coal, which is an increase of 16,800 tons (+430.8%) compared to the same period last year.
The dynamics of coal production and imports are expected to continue declining by 2027, as new energy generation capacities come online. According to estimates from the latest Energy Balance Forecast published by the National Strategy and Forecasting Commission (CNSP), both production and imports are projected to decrease by 11.4% and 24.5%, respectively.
In this outlook, coal production in Romania was estimated at 1.718 million tons of oil equivalent for 2025 (−10.5%), 1.555 million for 2026 (−9.5%), and 1.432 million for 2027 (−7.9%), indicating a gradual long-term structural decline in coal dependence.
