Romania has taken a significant step in modernizing its electricity system with the completion of the first phase of the Gura Ialomiței battery storage project in Ialomița County. The newly commissioned facility adds 150 MW of power capacity and 300 MWh of storage, making it one of the largest operational battery energy storage systems in the country.
The project was developed by Electrogrup, part of the E-INFRA group, which confirmed that work on the next development phase will begin without delay. Once fully expanded, the installation is expected to provide even greater grid flexibility, supporting Romania’s electricity system as it integrates a growing share of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
Construction of the first phase was completed in just seven months, despite challenging winter conditions and a tight implementation schedule. The facility was developed in partnership with Aukera Energy, while connection to the national transmission network was carried out in coordination with system operator Transelectrica, ensuring smooth integration into Romania’s high-voltage infrastructure.
According to Electrogrup, the commissioning of Gura Ialomiței marks another milestone in its rapidly expanding energy storage portfolio. With this project, the company has now delivered more than 1 GWh of installed battery storage capacity across Romania, making it one of the most active players in the country’s emerging storage sector. It is also the sixth completed storage project in its portfolio to date.
As Romania continues to expand its wind and solar generation capacity, battery storage systems are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability and balancing supply and demand. By storing excess electricity during periods of high production and releasing it during peak consumption, facilities like Gura Ialomiței enhance system reliability and improve the efficiency of renewable energy utilization.
With preparations for the second phase already underway, the project is set to become an increasingly important component of Romania’s energy transition strategy, supporting long-term efforts to modernize the power sector and strengthen energy security.
