Romania’s Cernavodă nuclear plant refurbishment has entered a new phase as Concelex secures a contract worth nearly 50 million euros from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP). The agreement covers construction of a broad range of technical and support facilities linked to the modernization of Unit 1, operated by Nuclearelectrica.
Work is set to begin in the first quarter of 2026 and is expected to conclude by the end of 2027. Refurbishing Unit 1 is a central element of Romania’s long-term nuclear strategy, aiming to extend the reactor’s operational life while maintaining strict safety standards.
Under the contract, Concelex will construct multiple operational and administrative structures, including technical buildings, logistics and storage areas, an electrical transformer substation, controlled-access facilities, internal roads, and platforms to support heavy equipment and material handling.
The project also involves installation of fire protection infrastructure, such as water reservoirs and pumping stations, relocation of utility pipelines and cable routes, groundwater monitoring systems, and the development of internal circulation zones for safe and efficient personnel and machinery movement.
In addition to structural works, Concelex will deliver full utility networks and implement security and surveillance systems tailored to nuclear operations, ensuring uninterrupted refurbishment while complying with rigorous safety criteria. The company’s prior involvement in Cernavodă’s dry spent fuel storage—including one completed and one ongoing project—cements its role as a key domestic contractor in Romania’s strategic nuclear infrastructure program.
