Electricity consumption in Romania in the first four months of 2020 amounted to 17.89 TWh, which is 5.4 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 13.25 TWh, which is 7.8 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 4.43 TWh, which is a 2.7 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 3.7 % amounting to some 206 GWh.
Total electricity production reached 19.41 TWh in the first four months of 2020, which is 7.1 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 17.1 % and reached 7.26 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 6.9 % to 4.57 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 3.3 % to 4.1 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 6.9 % compared to January-April 2019 period, reaching 2.94 TWh. Solar power production increased by 6.1 % to 548.5 GWh. Electricity exports in the first four months of 2020 amounted to 1.98 TWh, which is by 67.4 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports also increased by 82.6 % and amounted to 2.58 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-April 2020 amounted to 6,320 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 7.5 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 854.1 million tons of oil equivalent (- 32.6 %), oil production reached 1,102.8 million tons of oil equivalent (the same as last year), while production of natural gas reached 2,665.7 million tons of oil equivalent (- 4.3 %).
