Romania is set to strengthen its electricity system with a significant new battery energy storage project following a financing agreement between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the developers of a large-scale facility in Scornicesti.
The planned installation will feature a storage capacity of 254 MWh and an installed power rating of 127 MW, making it one of Romania’s most notable energy storage investments. The project is being developed through a partnership between renewable energy producer R.Power and Eiffel Investment Group, acting through its infrastructure-focused investment fund.
To support the development, the EBRD has approved financing of up to 44 million euros. The funding will be provided under a non-recourse project finance structure and will cover the development, construction and long-term operation of the battery storage facility.
A significant share of the financing package is supported by the European Union. Of the total amount, 29 million euros is backed by an InvestEU first-loss guarantee, helping reduce investment risks and encourage funding for strategic energy infrastructure projects.
The battery system is expected to play an increasingly important role as Romania continues to expand its renewable energy capacity. Under the country’s updated energy and climate strategy, the share of renewable energy in final consumption is targeted to reach 38.3% by the end of the decade.
As more wind and solar power projects are connected to the grid, maintaining network stability becomes increasingly complex. Energy storage technologies help address this challenge by absorbing surplus electricity during periods of high renewable generation and releasing it when demand increases, improving grid flexibility and reliability.
The Scornicesti battery project is expected to enhance Romania’s energy security, support the integration of larger volumes of renewable electricity into the national network and contribute to the country’s broader energy transition and decarbonization objectives.
