Romanian utility Electrica has secured technical network connection approvals for 17 battery energy storage projects, marking a key step forward in the development of a broader storage portfolio with a combined capacity of around 700 MWh.
The approvals define the technical conditions required to connect the planned facilities to the national electricity grid. With this milestone completed, the projects can now advance into the detailed design phase, followed by permitting and eventual construction. Electrica expects the battery systems to become operational by the end of 2027.
These storage assets form part of the company’s wider investment strategy, which targets the development of 1 GW of generation capacity and at least 900 MWh of energy storage by 2030. According to CEO Alexandru Chiriță, expanding battery capacity is essential for improving grid flexibility, facilitating renewable integration, and optimizing the use of existing network infrastructure.
The latest approvals come alongside a series of recent funding achievements. Earlier this month, Electrica secured approximately €935,000 from the EU Modernisation Fund for a battery storage project at the Vulturu solar power plant in eastern Romania.
The Vulturu project represents the latest in a growing list of initiatives supported by European funding. Electrica has already benefited from financing for the 27 MW Satu Mare 2 solar power plant, which has been completed, while additional support has been approved for the 69.93 MWh Fântânele battery storage facility, scheduled to enter operation later this year.
Together, these developments highlight Romania’s accelerating push toward large-scale energy storage deployment, aimed at strengthening system flexibility and supporting the country’s expanding renewable energy base.
