According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 13.93 TWh, which is 3.7 % less compared to the same period in 2021.
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 10.24 TWh, which is 2 % less compared to the same period last year. Household electricity consumption amounted to 3.53 TWh, which is a 4.4 % decrease. Public lighting consumption rose by 1.3 % amounting to some 148.6 GWh.
Total electricity production reached 14.88 TWh in the first three months of 2022, which is 5.7 % less compared to the same period in 2021. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 7 % and reached 5.63 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 25.2 % to 3.37 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 4.7 % to 3.02 TWh. Production of wind power in January-March 2022 rose by 23.9 % compared to the same period of 2021, reaching 2.5 TWh. Solar power production reached 348.5 GWh, 18.3 % more compared to the first quarter of 2021.
Electricity exports in January-March 2022 amounted to 1.46 TWh, which is by 9.3 % less compared to the same period in 2021. At the same time electricity imports increased by 13.1 % and amounted to 2.12 TWh.
Total production of primary energy resources in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 4,496 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 3.6 % less than in 2021. Coal production reached 696 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 0.9 %), oil production reached 732.7 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.2 %), while production of natural gas reached 1,791.3 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.9 %).
