According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consump-tion in Romania in the first quarter of 2019 amounted to 14.45 TWh, which is 1.6 % less compared to the same period last year. The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 11.02 TWh, which is 5.1 % less compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, households electricity consumption amounted to 3.26 TWh, which is a 12 % increase. Public lighting consumption rose by 5.7 % amounting to some 167.4 GWh. Total electricity production reached 15.99 TWh in the January-March period, which is 10.8 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 14.1 % and reached 7.08 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 21.9 % to 3.47 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 1 % to 2.98 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 3.6 % compared to January-March 2018, reaching 2.12 TWh. Solar power production increased by 36.7 % to 340.5 GWh.
Electricity exports in the first three months of 2019 amounted to 862.6 GWh, which is by 52.9 % (968.6 GWh) less compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports in-creased by 78.5 % and amounted to 1.13 TWh.
Total production of primary energy resources in January-March 2019 amounted to 5,167 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 3.4 % less than in the same period in 2018. In the first three months of the year, coal production reached 981.9 million tons of oil equivalent (- 9.8 %), oil production reached 829 million tons of oil equivalent (+ 0.1 %), while production of natural gas reached 2,116 million tons of oil equivalent (- 0.8 %).
