According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania in the first eight months of 2019 amounted to 37 TWh, which is 0.2 % less compared to the same period last year.
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 28.39 TWh, which is 5.1 % less compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, households electricity consumption amounted to 8.27 TWh, which is a 20.5 % increase. Public lighting consumption rose by 13.4 % amounting to some 384 GWh. Total electricity production reached 40.48 TWh in the January-August period, which is 6.6 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 9.4 % and reached 15.33 TWh.
Production in hydropower plants decreased by 10.9 % to 12.1 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 0.8 % to 7.35 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 5.2 % compared to January-August 2018, reaching 4.41 TWh. Solar power production increased by 4.7 % to 1.29 TWh. Electricity exports in the first eight months of 2019 amounted to 2.48 TWh, which is by 37.5 % or 1.45 TWh less compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 72.8 % and amounted to 2.75 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-August 2019 amounted to 13,428 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 3 % less than in the same period in 2018. In the first eight months of the year, coal production reached 2,475 million tons of oil equivalent (- 5.3 %), oil production reached 2,223 million tons of oil equivalent (- 1 %), while production of natural gas reached 5,396 million tons of oil equivalent (- 2.4 %).
